How to Host a House Concert

1. What exactly is a house concert?

A house concert is a live performance hosted in your home or yard — usually for 30–50 guests — where professional musicians bring their show directly to you.

2. My house is not large. Can I still have a house concert?

You do not need a big space to host - the cozier the better. House concerts are purposefully intimate. How you accommodate your guests is up to you. At some concerts all guests have a seat (chairs, cushions, blankets), whereas others have a mixture of seated and standing guests. Some people push aside the furniture and dance! There are no rules.

3. How many people should I invite?

We recommend the following structure: you host a minimum of 30 guests who contribute $30 each. All contributions go to the band.

4. How many musicians play at a house concert?

I bring my trio, Jennifer Hanson & The Handsome Lads. It is me, a guitar, a bass and a small PA system. Drums can be added if there are 50+ people and they want to dance!

5. How much space do I need for the musicians?

Enough to fit the three of us and our instruments, about 6 feet x 6 feet. We will also need access to one electrical outlet for our gear. We will need more room if drums are included in the gig.

6. How much time should I schedule for a house concert?

Our show typically consists of two 55-minute sets with a 15 minute break in between for people to get up and stretch their legs, fill up their drinks, and chat. We require 30 minutes to set up, and also to tear down when it's all over. Timing can be flexible - tell us what you have in mind.

7. What about refreshments?

House concerts can be low-fuss, low-cost affairs. You decide if you want to provide refreshments or if guests bring their own.

8. I would like to host an outdoor house concert. What do I need to know?

For safety purposes, we require a solid surface on which to perform such as a deck, patio or packed gravel/stone area. We will also need access to one electrical outlet. Don't worry about having enough seating - it's common to ask guests to BYOC (bring your own chair) for outdoor house concerts.

9. Do you travel to homes outside of Winnipeg?

You bet. There is an additional cost to cover travel expenses for homes more than 30 minutes outside the city.

10. Does JENERATOR play house concerts?

No. But yes. We play big house parties. Contact us with your plans!
